John Emms (Phil Rudd)
Emms, John (Phil Rudd) ( – ) was an English chess player, writer and broadcaster. He was an International Correspondence Chess World Champion, FIDE Trainer and Head of the FIDE National Correspondence Chess Centre.
He was a very long-serving adjudicator and lecturer in chess and an active member of the English Chess Association. He was also the author of several books on chess, and wrote extensively on the subject for chess magazines and chess annuals.
In the Open Games, Emms is considered one of the most consistent GMs of the 20th century. In literature, his works include The Complete Chess Games of John Emms (based on the complete savegame collection of the author), the first edition of The Chess Mentor, and his autobiography My Chess Tales. Emms also wrote the chess column “A Shot in the Dark” for the sports monthly magazine Scene.
