Using containers like Docker to host services is one of the most wonderful things about Docker. They’re a piece of software that keeps your services isolated from each other, so that they can run with the minimum of hassle. Until this week.
An Actual Problem
I’m working on a project at the moment, that involves lots and lots of tightly coupled systems. A simple example might be a user logging into a website, and having his/her data stored in a database.
This makes for an ideal testing environment, as all our tests can use real production data, and more importantly, we can create and update data without directly affecting each other.
We have an incredibly fast and powerful single machine, running everything as Docker containers, and the system is fully self-contained, so there’s no need for a bunch of machines and servers. Just the one. And it’s awesome.
I’m working on a request scoped service at the moment, so I don’t need a multi-tenant database to share data. This is because the vast majority of the data comes from a single environment, and adding extra data is a snap. So I have a local database, and I’m using the mysql extension to talk to that.
As a part of the build process, I need to create and update data from different components, so I have to work with the database as my shell. At the moment, I’m doing this using the mysql command-line client. No problem, I’ll set up my tests to use this command and have things working nicely. I mean, if you’re running MySQL, there’s a mysql-client command, so it’s fairly simple to integrate.
It’s going pretty well, until I add a transaction to an insert statement.
